Just about every May, I sit down to write Homeward Bound; I write about Mom’s Day. And why not… it is a very special day for very special people. My Mom used to tell me, seemingly repeatedly, to do this and do that, not to do this and not to do that. ALL, I recall, very valuable advice. Looking back on it all these many years later, I can say she was, and still is, a very wise woman.
Time reveals, in fact, just about every caring Mother is a Wise Woman. I can see why we carve out a special day each year to acknowledge Moms. So here is a shout-out to all moms – Happy Mother’s Day!!

Unfortunately, My Mom’s Mom is no longer here. I am sure that makes her very sad this time of year. I am sure some reading this can relate and have similar stories. For ALL those whose Mom is no longer with us, may you remember the best about them. In addition to that, there are also many who never knew their Mom due to unfortunate circumstances. I bet someone played that roll in their life and they too deserve a Happy Mother’s Day!
Regardless, we can celebrate this Mother’s Day knowing Moms both here and no longer here are special in more ways than we can count.

As you know SickKids Hospital of Toronto does awesome work in helping kids fight through and survive nasty life-threatening diseases like cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia, and others. They also lead the way in early diagnosis of Autism and recovery from spinal cord injuries. Most don’t know though that Children’s is a non-profit. They depend on sponsorships and donations to provide their world-class care and keep costs for the families of these beautiful kids to a minimum.
The Mom’s with kids being treated at SickKids Hospital are most likely NOT thinking about their special day this month. They are simply just being “Moms” doing what a real loving Mom does. God bless them for it.

Born, raised and growing up right here in Toronto I have seen many things change. I remember when it was just woods where two of the areas largest shopping malls are now, Vaughan Mills Mall and Yorkdale Mall. Most call it progress, and it is true that many have done well as the Greater Toronto Area has grown. There are however some in our community that for reasons beyond we can fully understand are experiencing real hardship. Circumstances like tragedy, loss, victim, homeless, disables, abused, hungry, gravely ill and unemployed. People with one or a combination of these hardships do exist and exist in numbers that would shock most. Thank God for the grateful people at Sick Kids Hospital.
